Become an Instructor

Thank you for expressing interest in becoming an instructor. The Indiana BMV requires all driver education instructors to complete an approved driver education course or training program. CIESC offers the training program to prospective instructors.

Here is a list of things to expect:

STEP 1: Complete Online Training Course

  • 10 hour online course – $250

STEP 2: Complete Behind the Wheel Observation

  • 20 hours of behind the wheel observation

STEP 3: After the online course and observation

  • Apply for and receive BMV instructor license (additional information will be provided with instructions)
    • Physical, background check, and online application (fees apply)

STEP 4: Apply for employment with CIESC or other driving school

CHOOSE WHICH STATEMENT BEST DESCRIBES WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING FOR:

The process of obtaining an instructor license and potential employment could take 3-4 months.

Instructors employed with CIESC must meet the following requirements:

  • At least 25 years of age
  • Valid Driver’s License with at least 5 years of driving experience
  • No more than 4 points on their driving record at all times
  • Previous experience working with youth in a leadership role

Working with CIESC DriverEd Safety

  • Complete an additional 5 -hour post-licensing supervised student driver lessons (no cost)
  • Commit to being available a minimum of 10 hours per week (no more than 29)
  • Autonomous work schedule
  • Current pay rate up to $29/hour
  • Yearly bonus up to $4400
  • CIESC Contributions to TRF/PRF

Before employment consideration, we would need a copy of your driving record and completion of the above mentioned training.

Our online instructor course is accepted throughout the state and satisfies requirements for the class portion of the training.  CIESC DriverEd Safety will be unavailable to assist with the behind the wheel observation piece of training. Your local driving school could help with the 20 hours of observation hours.

The following information was taken from the the BMV’s website:

The 20 hours of behind-the-wheel training will be provided by an Indiana licensed Driver Training School and must provide training pertaining to 140 IAC 4-4-1.2. Once the trainee has completed the program, the Driver Training School must provide the trainee with proof of completion on school’s letterhead containing the following information:

  1. Name of Indiana licensed Driver Training School; and
  2. Statement of training completion:
    “The trainee has completed the 20 hours of behind-the-wheel training instruction that meets the standards sets forth in 140 IAC 4-4-1.2.”
  3. Full name of trainee
  4. Driver’s license number of trainee
  5. Date training completed
  6. Name of each Driver Training Instructor that participated in training
  7. Signature of school owner or instructor

Payment and completion of this course does not guarantee employment with CIESC. Becoming a certified driver education instructor and your license will allow you to work for any driving school in Indiana.
