Mastering the Road Skills Test: A Complete Guide from CIESC’s DriverEd Safety

Road Skills Test

Every successful driver starts with the proper education and preparation. For students enrolled in DriverEd Safety, one of the most important milestones is the public road skills test. Passing this test exhibits that you’re ready to drive independently and responsibly. This guide walks you through everything you need to know to get fully prepared.

Whether you’re weeks away from your test or just starting to drive, this guide will help ensure you are confident, informed, and ready to pass.

Step 1: Understand the Eligibility Requirements

Before registering for the road skills test, ensure you meet the eligibility criteria:

  • Age Requirement: You must be at least 15 years and 6 months old to participate in the test.
  • Education Completion: Completion of both the 30-hour online class and 6-hour behind-the-wheel instruction is required.
  • Online Account Access: Students must use their DriverEdSafety login. Do not create a new account—contact support for help accessing your credentials.

Step 2: Practice Like It’s the Real Thing

One of the best ways to ensure you are test-ready is to simulate the test environment at home. This can be accomplished by conducting a mock road test with students before scheduling.

Parent-Led Practice Test Tips

  • The parent gives only directions—no coaching or corrections. We recommend using unfamiliar routes to evaluate the student’s adaptability.
  • Include varying driving tasks:
    • Roundabouts
    • Left and right turns at traffic signals
    • Parallel parking
    • Merging and lane changes
    • Left turns on solid green (students must demonstrate understanding)
  • IMPORTANT: Watch for independent decision-making. If a student repeatedly asks for clarification or needs intervention to prevent unsafe actions, they’re not quite ready.

DriverEd Safety created this parent guide to offer helpful tips and instructional ideas—not just to prepare for the road test, but to ensure a positive and effective practice experience.

Step 3: Schedule Your Test

CIESC offers road skills tests in select regions, and the process is student-friendly:

  1. Log in at DriverEdSafety.com.
  2. Enroll in the online road skills test service.
  3. Pay the $40 fee, which covers testing in a CIESC vehicle with instructor guidance.
  4. After payment, allow up to 7–10 business days for test scheduling.
  5. Make sure your test is scheduled within 30 days of payment.
  6. Make sure you have the required behind-the-wheel completion documentation on the test date.

What If You Don’t Pass?

Failure isn’t the end—it’s an opportunity to improve:

  • After the first two failed attempts, wait at least two weeks before retaking the test.
  • After three failures, you must wait 60 days before trying again.
  • Please note that the BMV will not issue a probationary license if a passing score is submitted before the 60-day waiting period has ended.

Why Take the Road Skills Test Through DriverEd Safety?

Opting to test with CIESC DriverEd Safety means:

  • There is no need to take the BMV test.
  • You’re working with certified instructors who already know your progress.
  • Familiar environments and vehicles reduce stress and improve performance.
  • Our scheduling flexibility aims to make transportation and testing more convenient.

In Conclusion: Be Test-Ready, Not Just Test-Able
